Escape from Alcatraz 2

My plan to swim the 1.5 miles from Alcatraz to San Francisco on the 15th of October is just a little over a month away.

I have been changing my usual swimming pattern of short bursts to long swims. Although I prefer long-distance swimming, I had to stop because my right hand would start tingling if I swam too long. In order to stop this, I have started taking lessons from experienced coach who is working to help me improve my stroke so that the nerves in my shoulder are not pinched.

The results have been quite good. On Tuesday I swam 43 minutes (a bit over a mile) with only the occasional tingle. I came out its quite refreshed and felt I could have done twice the distance. So my endurance is progressing well. But here's the really good news: Today I went down to the Dolphin Club. This is a club in the Marina for people who like to swim in the Bay. I did my first swim in the actual waters of the Bay. There were at least two things in my favor. The water was 62° - It was so warm it was like being in Florida (well, sort of). The other thing was that I had an insulated bathing cap. I have never used one before. I always had thin Lycra caps. An insulated cap changes everything. You lose most of your heat through your head. Diving into cold water is like when you eat ice cream too fast. With an insulated cap nothing like this happens. The result: a piece of cake! I did half a mile and could have done three times the distance.

So this week I'm feeling quite positive about my prospects -- but you never know...

Escape from Alcatraz 1

I have just started training for the "Escape from Alcatraz" swim from Alcatraz Island to San Francisco on Sunday, October 15 at nine in the morning.

The distance is about 1 1/2 miles and the water temperature will be in the low 60s. I estimate that it will take me a little bit over an hour to complete the course.

There will be at least 200 people doing the swim and it will be well supervised, so I do not envisage any problems. I will keep you informed of my progress when anything interesting happens.

In Paris

I arrived in Paris Friday, 20 February and will be here until 2 March. I read The Piano Shop on the Left Bank by Thad Carhart. Movies included Intolerable Cruelty Featuring: George Clooney, Catherine Zeta-Jones , Looney Tunes: Back in Action Featuring: Brendan Fraser, Jenna Elfman , Duplex with Ben Stiller, Drew Barrymore, The Rundown Featuring: The Rock, Seann William Scott, Under the Tuscan Sun Featuring: Diane Lane, Raoul Bova. Because I see so few movies in my life, all movies are (for me) good, fun to watch, and offer fascinating insight into comtemporary society. Here are some flying tips for people taking long flights who are not kids: If your ankles swell during long flights (as mine do), this could make you susceptible to phlebitis or bllod clots in your legs. Recommendations to help in preventing swelling include; o standing up and moving around from time to time o wearing support socks that compress the ankles o takig an aspirin to thin your blood

mind trick

While sitting in your chair, lift your right foot slightly off the ground and move it in clockwise circles. Now draw the numeral "6" in the air with your right hand. Your foot will involuntarily reverse direction.

New Year Cards

For quite a few years, I've sent out Christmas cards and more recently emails. There are a number of issues with this effort. Not everybody likes Christmas cards. Particularly people who are not Christians. Also preparing Christmas cards takes a lot of work in terms of creating the layout and addressing the messages and so on. In the Christmas season time is at a premium, because this is a wonderful time to be with children family and friends. So there has to be a better answer. And there is. And the French have it. Some time ago the French government began to be very strict about separating church and state. It thus became impossible for the government to send out Christmas cards. But government officials did want to maintain the tradition of staying in contact with lots of people with a token message each year. Thus the French government changed to sending New Year cards. Now everybody in France sends New Year cards. The date of arrival does not seem to be too important. Sometime in December or January is OK. I like this idea very much and so I am switching to sending New Year cards.

New Purpose

Thank you, Larry Schell, for asking to see my web sites. Spurred me to clean the files and get them up to a reasonable level of appearance/coherance. In the past this web log has been used to try out new templates nd to explore the technicalities of blogging. Occasionally it was used as a place to talk to myself. From now on the talking to myself will be in another blog. This blog will tell people where I am or what I am working on. This week I am going to cousin Diana's for Thanksgiving, a birthday party for my aquafitness coach, and maybe down to see Philip and Helen. Will be working on fogg.us, pgc and nigel... Note: I am able to send an email from my new Treo and have it post automatically to this web site. Unfortunately Blogger will not automatically display any pictures attached to the email. But Blogger appear to be working on this.
